How to Get to Bukit Lawang

Bukit Lawang is located in North Sumatra, Indonesia, approximately 3 to 5 hours from Medan Kualanamu Airport (depending on traffic). To begin your journey, you’ll need to fly to Kualanamu Airport, with connecting flights available from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, or Jakarta. For the best deals, we recommend Air Asia.

Once you arrive, you can choose one of three transportation options—private car, tourist bus, or public bus—to reach Bukit Lawang, based on your budget, time, and comfort.

From Medan Kualanamu International Airport
to Bukit Lawang

Public Transport

For travelers on a budget, public buses provide an adventurous and affordable way to reach Bukit Lawang. While inexpensive, this option takes longer and offers limited comfort. You’ll need to take two buses:

Take the ALS Bus (orange color) from Medan Kualanamu International Airport to Binjai
(2 hours, Rp. 50,000 per person).

Once at Binjai, take a tuk-tuk
(Rp. 5,000) to Tanah Lapang Binjai terminal or Binjai Supermall to catch the L300 or PS bus to Bukit Lawang
(3 hours, Rp. 30,000 per person).

From Bukit Lawang’s terminal, take a becak (Rp. 10,000) or arrange a free motorbike pick-up with us (contact us via WhatsApp one hour before arrival).

Private Car

For the fastest and most comfortable option, book a private car with air conditioning, accommodating up to 4 people. This service includes a pick-up or drop-off directly from your guesthouse in Bukit Lawang. Your driver can stop for ATMs or money changers upon request.

Cost: Rp. 700,000 per car (max 4 people with luggage)
Travel Time: 3 to 5 hours depending on traffic.
